Outstanding Student Interest in Medical Physics

On Monday, March 17, we hosted the event “A Glimpse into Medical Physics”, featuring presentations from alumni and professionals in the field. The Ernst-Mach Lecture Hall was filled to capacity, reflecting our students’ enthusiasm for exploring exciting career opportunities in medical physics.

Wolfgang Birkfellner, who earned his Master’s degree in Theoretical Physics from our Faculty in 1996, later pursued an academic career in medical physics. Since 2012, he has served as the Head of the Postgraduate Course in Medical Physics. His presentation provided an insightful overview of the origins and evolution of the field, setting the stage for additional talks from colleagues working across various specialties in medical physics.

The Postgraduate Program in Medical Physics is offered at the Medical University of Vienna. The six-semester (60 ECTS) program equips students with both theoretical knowledge and practical expertise, preparing them for careers as hospital medical physicists in patient diagnosis and treatment, as well as leadership roles in companies developing innovative medical technologies. The three-year program typically consists of six sessions per semester, each spanning two days (Friday and Saturday), incorporating both lectures and hands-on exercises.

A heartfelt thank you to all the alumni and professionals who took the time to share their insights and expertise with our students. And, of course, a special thanks to our students—your strong attendance made all the organizational efforts truly worthwhile!
